Raccoons kept as pets

Two Winchester men who were keeping raccoons at their residence as pets have been fined a total of $1,200.

Matias Espinoza, 71, was found guilty of keeping live game wildlife in captivity and of obstructing a conservation officer (CO). Justin Espinoza, 31, was found guilty of two counts of obstructing a conservation officer. They were each fined $600 by Justice of the Peace Linda LeBlanc.

On May 30, 2008, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit contacted Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) officers to advise them of raccoons being kept at the residence of Matias and Justin Espinoza in Winchester. The raccoons had scratched two young children. The health unit expressed concern the raccoons might have rabies.

According to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, people are prohibited from keeping wildlife in captivity unless authorized by the MNR.
