It can be a smelly problem this time of year, more skunks killed on the roads.

Sam Wilson, furbearer and non-game mammal biologist of the State Game and Parks Commission, says skunks are common in Nebraska, and it's not unusual to see more of them as roadkill this time of year because they're on the move looking for mates.

But Wilson says that's not the only reason skunks aren't quick to get out of the way of traffic.

"Skunks are a little bit more calm than most animals because they have that defense of the smell, so they're not as afraid of predators and they're not as wary as some other animals are. And unfortunately they're not as wary of cars," Wilson said.

Wilson says skunks are more active at sunrise and sunset, and can be found in any habitat. So drivers should be especially careful at night. Plus, he says a good springtime reminder for all wildlife, if you see baby animals, leave them alone.
