Boy, 17, sets fire to caged raccoon

Fort Wayne police and Animal Care and Control officers are investigating an animal cruelty case after a 17-year-old boy doused a caged raccoon with lighter fluid and set the animal on fire.

Neighbors called police to the 500 block of Fifth Street on Thursday after they saw four boys standing around the burning animal and laughing. One of the boys was spraying liquid on the raccoon that made the fire flare up and burn more, police said.

When officers arrived, they found the raccoon blackened and shaking but still alive in a cage in a nearby alley. An officer shot the animal twice to put it out of its misery, the report said.

Officers identified suspects in the case, though they refused to talk to detectives, police said.
