Around 1 p.m. some customers noticed the critter and called Alexandria Animal Control. The raccoon meandered around the lot, almost jumping into Glen Smith's truck. Glen was just finishing up some shopping when he noticed the critter walking toward him. He quickly closed the driver's side door to let the sickly animal walk by him.
"Raccoon! That's all I can say," Smith said. "He's gotten buy something."
Most shoppers didn't know what to think about the raccoon. Amy Boraas seemed nervous. She quickly scooped up her daughter Hannah when she spotted the animal.
"We were startled. I just wanted to get into the store. I didn't think we'd see a raccoon in the daytime," Boraas said. "It was not a typical day."
The Lakes Area Humane Society said it is very unusual for raccoons to come around populated areas, especially during the day. The only exception would be if the animal was diseased or injured.
Wal-Mart employees eventually captured the raccoon, and put it in a pet carrying case. Wal-Mart Manager Chris Ford said he'd never seen anything like it.
"Twenty-two years at Wal-Mart, and it's the first time I ever had to chase a raccoon," Ford said.
Wal-Mart employees waited Friday afternoon for Alexandria Animal Control to pick up the animal. Animal Control did not return calls to KSAX by Friday evening about what would be the fate of the animal.
